Shanghai’s closeness to the sea (40 km from the coast) and the mouth of the Yangtze River (20 km) makes it very humid almost all year round. Its general climate is humid subtropical and seasons are quite pronounced. Winter is cold and dry with snow falling at least a couple of times each year thanks to winds from Siberia. Temperatures have been known to drop as low as -5 º C, although this is exceptional, while summers are hot and humid with the thermometer marking up to 39 º C, especially in July which is the hottest month of the year. The best seasons for visiting the city are therefore spring and fall.

Shanghai is China’s biggest metropolis and one of the world’s top ten ports. It lies to the south of the Yangtze delta, next to one of its tributaries, the Huangpu, which pours into the East China Sea. In fact, the two characters that form the name “Shanghai” (上, shang, and 海 hai) literally mean “up to or over” and “sea”, respectively, but tradition has it that the words actually mean “to go towards the sea”.
Shanghai is near the coast of the East China Sea, 1,064 km south of the Beijing and 1,240 km north of Hong Kong.
It is China’s commercial capital par excellence although it was always criticized for being a playground for European imperialism because of its cultural and commercial activities, as well as the concessions it granted to the British and French. The city boasts a wealth of architectural styles that range from traditional Chinese designs to European colonial buildings made of marble and the ultra-modern skyscrapers. It is also China’s most cosmopolitan and vanguard city and will host the Shanghai Expo in 2010.
Come and experience Shanghai for yourself.
