Tokyo is a city that never rests and its novelties will fill you with an overwhelming desire to leave your hotel and walk the busy streets of the city, mixing with the colorful masses and wide-eyed tourists fascinated by this city of the future. The city is located almost in the center of the large island of Honshu, on the edge of Tokyo Bay, and serves to protect the port. The city faces the sea to the east and to the west it borders prefectures and highlands where you will find Mount Fuji (3.776 m).

When the city was founded it was not planned to become a metropolis, but over the centuries it developed at its own pace to become what it is today. Tokyo was founded in 1457 when construction began on a castle in the locality known as Edo (estuary) and was later established as the center of feudal government by the shogun Tokugawa Leyasu who controlled a large part of Japan. In 1868 the Emperor, who had remained in Kyoto (the capital up to that point), occupied Edo Castle thereby converting it into an Imperial Palace and in the process changed the name of the area to Tokyo, “the capital of the east”. The name stuck.

Tokyo has suffered major earthquakes, eruptions of Mount Fuji, fires and even bombing raids during times of war but has always had the spirit to rise again.

The center of Tokyo, one of the most densely populated cities in the world, is formed by 23 neighborhoods (kú) that are home to businesses, traditional architecture, modern skyscrapers and the multiple entertainment options needed to keep a population that never rests, works hard and is always demanding surprises busy. There is almost no space in the center for homes so neighborhoods like Tama, to the West of the city, have appeared to offer much needed housing. It should be noted that it is wise to plan your visits and trips using the urban train system or in fact walking since Tokyo suffers major traffic congestion, especially during the afternoon rush hour.
