This ageless city in southern Mexico is still very much in vogue. In keeping its roots alive, Oaxaca almost feels like an independent region. Architecture, painting, music, cuisine and other cultural reflections come together through events like the Guelaguetza, a religious festival that combines pre-Hispanic and indigenous traditions. The result of such a blend can only be described as fantastic. Despite the city’s historic legacy, its inhabitants maintain a buoyant spirit. Witness it for yourself in the colorful outfits of indigenous women, the fanciful animal figurines known as alebrijes, the handicraft stalls at the Benito Juárez market and the works of local craftsmen, rooted in tradition. The city is in constant motion, even at night, and there’s virtually no way you can spend enough time here. Be sure to try the traditional cuisine, among the country’s finest. Sample Oaxaca’s moles, tlayudas, grasshoppers and mescal, especially during holidays.
