New Orleans

The largest city in Louisiana, New Orleans is perched on the banks of the Mississippi River, about 100 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Established as a French settlement in the early 1700s, New Orleans quickly became an important port and trade center. Even after Napoleon’s sale of the territory to the U.S., New Orleans and the state of Louisiana maintained its French culture, language, religion and character. Today, New Orleans is renowned for free-flowing music from Bourbon Street and the French Quarter, as well as its annual Mardi Gras celebration.
