This small “model city” located 56 kilometers from Los Angeles was founded in 1881 as a small desert settlement that flourished thanks to the engineering projects of Canadian George Chaffey, starting with a clean water system and moving on to an electricity supply and other services. Its economic backbone was agriculture, especially citrus fruits, although now it is also home to industries and commerce on a smaller scale. Demographic growth and the consequent increase in the number of buildings have gathered momentum in recent years and the cost of living is a little higher than the national average.
Ontario is also known as the gateway to Southern California as it links up with a number of highways heading that way, and also because of its sleek international airport, courtesy of the city of Los Angeles. It is flanked by the ocean, the mountains and the desert, which makes it more peaceful more than majestic, especially as most of the entertainment centers are located on the outskirts of town.
