Established as a Spanish mission in the early 1700s, San Antonio played a major role in the history of Texas. In the infamous 1836 battle of the Alamo, Texas colonists seeking independence from Mexico fought to the bitter end before being defeated by the Mexican army. The Republic of Texas was born just one short month later. Following Texas statehood and the Civil War, San Antonio welcomed the arrival of the railroad, along with waves of European immigrants, who added to the city’s diverse cultural identity. Development of the famed River Walk began in the 1920s and expanded with the city through the rest of the century to offer today’s visitors a wealth of restaurants, hotels, shopping and nightlife options.
