Despite its mostly modern appearance, Santiago is a city of historic architecture with some of its buildings dating from the 16th century. However, what really catches your eye when you first arrive are the mountains surrounding the city ¬–principally the eastern side of the Andes mountain range¬– which seem to wrap Santiago in a kind of natural blanket. The urban landscape offers a variety of scenes ranging from peaceful residential areas –such as Las Condes, La Florida and Barrio Lastarria to the busy shopping streets of downtown –like the Paseo Peatonal Ahumada. Although there are a number of places to visit if you are interested in architecture or museums, this city also invites the visitor to abandon human constructions to enjoy its nature reserves or go skiing on the mountains in the winter (from June to September).
The city isn’t so big that you won’t be able to see it all provided you organize a practical schedule. While it is the Latin American city receiving the largest amount of foreign business visitors, there are also those who visit this long and narrow country to see its museums, parks, mountains and other places of interest.
